Grand River Collegiate Institute’s Safe, Caring and Inclusive Schools Team was successful in receiving a grant from the Ministry of Education to support racialized and Indigenous students in Ontario schools and more specifically, here at GRCI.  The team has planned a month of activities where GRCI will endeavour to open minds and reach hearts.

GRCI Celebrates Our Diversity through the month of April with different activities and events including our kick-off on Thursday, April 6th!

We will be welcoming different guests and groups throughout the month including:

Thursday, April 6th:  Lunchtime Concert with Two time Juno Nominee Alysha Brilla!  “A multi-racial child of the Indian diaspora, Alysha’s art aims to unite people through the Canadian cultural kaleidoscope and bring light to social inequity issues in Canada and abroad.  Her music and workshops feature strong themes of cultural diversity, gender equality and inclusivity.”

Wednesday, April 12:  Developing Champions with Champion boxer (super middleweight) and certified coach and trainer, Syd “The Jewel” Vanderpool!

Wednesday, April 19:  Canadian Refugee Stories with Crossing Borders!

Thursday, April 20:  Aboriginal Arts Education for Ontario Schools Specializing in Native Dance with Tribal Vision!

Also, there are two interactive activities that students can participate in all month long!

Critical Thinking Gallery Walk:  Students can provide their thoughts to the question – What can we Unlearn? on giant post-its next to Unlearn graphics on the walls of the cafeteria.

Where in the World have you been? Our students and staff can show GRCI the names of cities around the world that they have visited or have family roots by following @GrandRiverSAC #worldwide and finding their pin(s) on the world map outside the cafeteria.
