May 11th, 2016
As many of you may know, since Sunday, May 1, 2016, more than 88,000 people of Fort McMurray, Alberta, and surrounding communities have been evacuated from their homes and businesses due to the massive Alberta wildfires that continue to burn. As thousands of people flee to safety with sometimes no more than the clothes on their back, 1,547 brave firefighters, and hundreds more of emergency personnel and volunteers, have run towards the fire to help in any way they can. Unfortunately, the Alberta Government isn’t expecting evacuees to be going back to their communities anytime soon, maybe even months, and is looking to the rest of the country for their support.
That’s where we come in!
The students, staff and community members of the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) have always come together in times of need to support various local and global relief efforts when disaster and traumatic events have occurred, and helping our own Canadian neighbours in Fort McMurray, Alberta will be no different!
From Tuesday, May 10 to Wednesday, June 15, 2016, students, staff, parents and community members who wish to donate to the Fort McMurray Disaster Relief effort may consider doing so by visiting the Waterloo Region Education Foundation Inc. (WEFI) or through individual school-run fundraising campaigns that will be starting in the coming days or weeks. These school-run activities are an excellent way for our students to engage in social responsibility.
Once the money has been raised, we will donate all funds to the Canadian Red Cross, the organization picked to coordinate the relief efforts in Alberta. In addition to our Board-wide donation, the Government of Canada will match our donation amount to help make an even greater impact.
The people of Fort McMurray and its surrounding communities who are affected by these growing forest fires need our help more than ever! The Region of Waterloo is a compassionate and caring community of people and we hope you consider making a donation today to help support our fellow Canadians.
Feel free to share with us how you are helping those in Alberta using our #WRDSBCares hashtag on Twitter.
