Welcome to the 2016-17 School Year!
It is with pleasure that I extend warm greetings to all members of the Grand River Community. Fifty years ago this September we opened this great school. I am honoured to be the Principal of Grand River Collegiate. Grand River holds special memories for me, as I am a proud former Renegade. Grand River Collegiate has much to offer every student and I am always impressed by the many ways the community supports the students in our area.
As you begin the new school year please take the time to reflect, refine and set new personal and academic goals for the coming year. Remember that your teachers and other staff members are here to support you in the pursuit of your goals.
I would encourage all Grand River students to get involved in extra-curricular activities at school. Extra-curricular activities (clubs, teams, musical ensembles, drama productions, etc.) enrich your high school experience. They are a great avenue for you to feel connected with the school, your peers, and your teachers, and to develop important life skills. Finally, participation in extra-curricular activities will help you create lasting memories of your time here at GRCI. For a list of extra-curricular activities, please visit the GRCI website at grc.wrdsb.ca. There will be a club fair in the front foyer on September 22nd during lunch. Please listen to the morning announcements and/or check out the television screens to find out more about teams, music ensembles, and extra-curricular activities. I believe when students take the initiative to participate in the many aspects of school life, they will develop their full potential.
Working with our parent community is a priority and I urge you to be active in your child’s education whether it is through School Council, attending Parent/Teacher Night, contacting your son/daughter’s classroom teachers, Guidance Counsellor, or Vice-Principal if you have any questions or concerns, or discussing with your child what they are learning. We need your support in order to make a difference with our students. Our first Parents’ Night is October 19th from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.; this evening provides an early indication of student progress. Please mark this date on your calendar. Parents, teachers, support staff, and administrators working together will make a positive difference in the lives of our students.
Please look to our website grc.wrdsb.ca for updated school news and calendar of events. Consider subscribing to the website for breaking school news.
I look forward to seeing you again in the hallways, classrooms, the cafeteria, or at various activities throughout the year.
I am looking forward to a wonderful school year. Go Renegades!
Ms. D. Tyrrell
