We want to update you on our plans for the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) this year.
About the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)
All students must successfully complete the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) in order to earn a secondary school diploma. The test is normally taken in grade 10, however students in grade 11 and 12 who have yet to participate in the OSSLT will be provided the opportunity this year.
The test is based on Ontario curriculum expectations for language and communication, particularly reading and writing, up to and including grade 9.
The OSSLT is the standard method for assessing the literacy skills of students in Ontario. It is used to determine if students meet the provincial secondary school literacy requirement for graduation. The test identifies students who have demonstrated the required skills in literacy as well as those who need to do further work. For those who do not meet the requirements, the test identifies the specific areas in which these students need additional study.
What Grade 10, 11 and 12 students need to know
- Students will be provided with opportunities to fulfill this requirement during the school day.
- Grade 11 and 12 students who have yet to fulfill the literacy requirement will be invited to participate in the OSSLT this fall.
- Grade 10 students will be invited to participate in the OSSLT this spring.
- Your school will communicate the dates and times that the OSSLT will be held.
For Remote Learning Students
The Ministry of Education requires students writing the OSSLT to do so in-person. Secondary Remote Learning Program (SRLP) students will be invited to write the OSSLT at their home school. If that option is not suitable, students and their families are encouraged to connect with their home school.
Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC)
The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC) provides students with intensive support in achieving the required reading and writing competencies, and with an alternative means of demonstrating their literacy skills.
According to The Ministry of Education, students do not need to attempt the OSSLT to enroll in OSSLC during the 2022-23 school year. Additionally, students who have previously unsuccessfully attempted the OSSLT may enroll in the OSSLC. To enroll in the OSSLC, please connect with your guidance counselor.
Adjudication Process
An adjudication process will be centrally conducted during the 2022-23 school year for eligible students. More information will be provided at a later date.
